Notes for SAMUEL BARNES:

This data was obtained mainly from Mamie Alice (Tibbetts) Johnson, our Aunt Alice, the daughter of Mary (Mishler) Tibbetts - second wife of Samuel Barnes. Aunt Alice was interviewed regarding Sam Barnes on January 11, 2000, at her home in Bremerton, Washington, by Janice Ann (Tibbetts) Hunt, the sixth child of Marvin Tibbetts, son of Mary. Sam's death location was provided by Caryll (Wheeler) Tibbetts, wife of Charles Tibbetts, first child of Marvin.

Samuel Barnes met Mary Elizabeth (Mishler) Tibbetts while he was construction foreman and she was a cook at the Birchwood, Wisconsin Golf Course, now called Tagalong, when the facility was being built about 1923. Mary's only son Marvin Tibbetts, who was also employed with the construction crew, also met his wife-to-be Inga Johnson at this location about the same time - but that's another story. Sam and Mary were both widowers and they married at Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1924. Mamie Alice Tibbetts, Mary's only daughter, was attending Normal School in Menomonie at that time and she married George Johnson also in 1924. Not much is known by the Tibbetts clan of Sam's early life but it is thought he was probably born in Menomonie for he lived there as a young man. Sam played professional baseball for the Menomonie baseball team. His mother continued to live in Menomonie after Sam married Mary who helped care for his mother until she died. It is thought that Sam's first wife died, but nothing else of her is known other than that she and Sam had two children, a son Alfred Barnes, and a daugher, name unknown. The daughter never married and had a good job in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sam Barnes had two brothers, George Barnes who never married and lived in a shanty on a lot on 6th Street, Menomonie; and Jim Barnes who married Hattie Barnes. Jim worked for the post office delivering mail out in the country. Jim & Hattie had 3 children, a boy and 2 girls. Sam Barnes had one sister, Mildred (Millie) Barnes who married Martin Krogstad and they lived in Menomonie. Sam Barnes continued to live at their 5th Street, Menomoie, home following the death of Mary in 1957 until his failing health required his entering a Veteran's home in King, Wisconsin (near Appleton) where he later died.
